Ashling & Barry Were Married in The Summerhill House on 1st December 2017
On 29th July 2005, I went with my sister to the afters of a neighbour’s wedding. There is where I met my husband. He was best man for his brother, he caught my eye on the dance floor. I liked his smile, he asked me to dance, he got my number from a friend and our story began.
Barry proposed to me in July 2010, four months after we had our first baby. I never thought it would have been another seven more years before I would say I do, but baby no. two came along and then we bought our first house. Getting married wasn’t our first priority anymore.
It was February 2017, my Nan was turning 79 and we had a girls’ day out. We brought her to the Summerhill House Hotel in Enniskerry for afternoon tea. I really love this hotel, you get such a warm feeling from the minute you walk in, so homely. We had a great afternoon and were about to leave and noticed that they were having a wedding fair on in the hotel so we thought it would be rude to not pop in and have a look around while we were there. I ended up booking our wedding with Emma on the day. I had no details to give her, no numbers, nothing, as it wasn’t planned. Emma was so helpful, re assured me details can all be confirmed another day. She took time out to show me how the room would look with a big or small wedding, informed me that you can have your wedding ceremony here. I really liked the idea of having my entire wedding in one location and they only do one wedding a day. I liked that idea, I knew I had made the right decision. I knew this was where I wanted to be married, the Summerhill was meant to be for me, it was where our story began. When I came home Barry asked did I have a nice day, I said, ‘Yeah, it was really nice and funny that, I booked our wedding”. He didn’t look surprised. surprised. I say knowing I had been waiting 7 years it was going to be happening sooner than later, but he was like cool where and when are we getting married? I said the Summerhill and he loved the idea, that’s where we met. I said its booked for December 1st this year, do you think we have enough time to save up? I said we can if we put our mind to it and so the planning began!
As I am a perfectionist, I did all the planning as I wanted everything to be just right. Well he did organise the Offbeat Donut stand which did go down a treat. The hotel was very helpful with any questions I had. Seamus the wedding coordinator was there to help with any need I had. We were given a complementary wedding menu tasting which was so nice, you kind of need to be wearing stretchy pants for so much food, so enjoyable. I wanted to keep all my suppliers local, we were well looked after by Eternity Jewellers for our wedding rings. Ikon Art designed our wedding invitations & Ross Print kindly printed them for us. The photographer we used Charlie Sharkey, Videographer from East Coast Video Productions. They were so nice and easy going. Our photographer’s assistant made a great bridesmaid, fixing and making sure my dress was perfect for the day. Cakes by Sam made our fabulous chocolate orange biscuit cake, with a Mr and Mrs Snowman on top. Rachel Nolan looked after our hair & Frankie Lawlor looked after our makeup, all local suppliers.
We had a civil ceremony, with a fairy light drop and a Christmas tree in the bay window. It was truly magical in every sense of the word. We got to share our special day with our two beautiful boys, close family and friends, small & intimate. Christmas is our favourite time of year so why not got married at this best time? We hired Rua, an illusionist, to entertain our guests after our ceremony. The whole day was so enjoyable, the kids got to have a dance and to have fun in the photobooth, eat lots from the sweet cart, and once the babysitter arrived I was straight on that dance floor enjoying every moment. All our guests commented on how they were fed like kings & queens, and how great the day was. The hotel really went out of their way for us, made us feel really special.
Our day has come and gone, now to start a new chapter in our life as husband and wife.
