Donna & Alex Real Wedding in Farnham Estate

Real Wedding in the Cavan’s Farnham Estate

When we think of our wedding journey, it takes us back to one cold and crispy Christmas Day. Like any other Christmas, we were enjoying the hustle bustle, seeing friends and family throughout the morning. Alex was his usual self and Donna had no inkling as to what was coming next. We were gathered in Donna’s parent’s kitchen before going to her grandparents for Christmas Lunch when BBC Newsline came on, or so she thought. There was Tara Mills sitting as usual welcoming us to a special Christmas Day broadcast. The atmosphere in the room took a turn when she said that they were broadcasting from the Darcy household in Tattyreagh and named everyone in the room.  It soon became clear what was happening and we were celebrating our engagement minutes later!  It was a special Christmas for us and we enjoyed every minute of being engaged before making any wedding plans!

We finally bit the bullet a few months later and began the hunt for hotels. Thankfully it was a painless experience. At our second hotel visit, we encountered the delight that was Patsy at Farnham Estate. We didn’t need any time to decide and we reserved the date there and then. We knew it was the perfect venue for us, with the beautiful surroundings and serene setting and we could not have felt more reassured with Patsy looking after us. We took things at a casual pace from then on; with our work schedules we had to squeeze in time here and there to make plans. Our main aim was to enjoy the experience and we took every opportunity to do so- it made everything all the more memorable with a stress free experience.

As with the hotel, the wedding dress was a case of lucky number two. The hunt was very swiftly whittled down to a Mikaella Bridal dress and luckily there was a stockist just a few minutes away from home.  Donna called them and got a booking with Jenny Lindop in Bangor. Jenny and her staff were so professional and attentive. It didn’t take long to fall in love with Mikaella 1957 dress and get an instant seal of approval. Jenny stocked some beautiful accessories and Donna couldn’t say no to a beautiful Miranda Templeton head band and Richard Designs veil. Donna’s sisters had bridesmaid duties and dress shopping was certainly an experience. They were more interested in the toy section in Debenhams than trying on dresses. With a little compromise we decided on beautiful J S Boutique dresses from House of Fraser. We never anticipated that suit shopping could be more difficult than dress shopping. We spent two days with our brothers, fathers and mothers in tow, looking for suits. We ended up at Moss Bros in Banbridge and after at least two hours in the shop we finally got sorted or so we thought. We had a last minute dash just weeks before the wedding to get Alex a waistcoat as we had ordered the wrong size. Thankfully Michael at Moss Bros was a star and made sure we were looked after.

Fast forward to the wedding in February. We arrived at Farnham Estate two days before and met with Ciara from the wedding team. During our planning process, Patsy went off on maternity leave and much to our relief Ciara stepped up and did a fantastic job looking after us! She was always at hand to solve whatever we threw at her and it was great for Donna to have her there on the day itself. We were joined by friends and family on Friday, who came to start the celebrations early. There was such a buzz in the Cellar Bar that night and great to see so many of our nearest and dearest. As for the wedding itself, words can’t really sum up the amazing day we had. The girls from Farnham estate looked after the makeup and we used their recommended hairdresser, Tracy. What a great job they did.  Our photographers and videographers, Creativ3 Media, were a dream to work with. We have had so many comments from guests and hotel staff about how professional they were and most importantly for us they made it such an enjoyable experience. They commissioned a very special wedding music video for us or “Marryoke” as they are more commonly known. For us, it is the best keepsake of the day and we are always in fits of laughter when we watch it back. Niall Donnelly Music provided flawless ceremony music and an acoustic set during our drinks reception. He didn’t get much of a break before he  came back to join his band “The Rockits” for the evening, and what a show they put on – truly outstanding and real showmen. Each and every member of staff went above and beyond on the day; Jonathan and Vincent were there to keep things running smoothly and made sure we were looked after. The food was exceptional, as was the delicious cake from Top Tier Cakes in Cavan. The real icing on the cake was our company – no matter how perfect the setting, it can never match up to our family and friends enjoying our day with us and giving us so many special memories to cherish.

We knew Farnham Estate was the perfect venue for us

We were among the final few trickling back to rooms at around 4am. 7am came early, and we were up for a “Home Alone” style packing session (and the tastiest breakfast) before Chris, Henry and Jack came to get us for the final Marryoke shots  – we were all a little tender but still on a high! And then it was over – all packed and ready to go, we said our goodbyes and headed off to the airport. It was nice to leave a crisp and cold February behind for a warm and sunny Mexico. We had two weeks of luxury and relaxation at the Royalton Riviera in Cancun with many moments to remember, never without laughter. We have already returned to Farnham Estate for a 3 night break and we are sure it will be the first of many.
