Ross and I first met back in 2008 in Carlow where we were both living at the time. We started out as friends but we both knew straight away that there was a spark and less than three months after meeting we went on our first date. The only glitch was that I had already planned an around the world trip with one of my best friends and ten months later we said our tearful goodbyes in Dublin airport. We spoke on the phone every day and after three months apart Ross decided to quit his job and fly to Australia to continue the trip with me!
Fast forward to three years after returning home and while on a weekend away in Kelly’s Resort in Wexford Ross had a plan up his sleeve. After dinner he disappeared “to the bathroom” and came back looking very pale saying he was feeling ill and we should go for a walk. I thought nothing of it and as we rounded a corner I was stunned to see a bandstand glowing under the flames of dozens of tea lights and red roses. Next thing I knew Ross was down on one knee with a ring box in his hand. Now I’m not one for surprises but this was the best surprise of my life!

The wedding planning began and Kilronan Castle was our number one choice. We viewed a couple of other venues but we both knew it would be impossible to beat Kilronan Castle. After our first meeting with Ciara we knew there and then that we could rely on the Kilronan Castle staff to make our special day perfect.
Choosing my bridesmaids was not difficult, having my sister Amanda and my best friend Rachel by my side on the big day was a no brainer. Ross’ best man and groomsman were his best friends Dave and Paul.

Next, the dress hunt began and I travelled the country to find my dress and to say I tried on over 50 dresses would be no exaggeration! I finally chose an Ellis Bridal gown and Catherine Cross in Rathangan did a superb job on the alterations. The bridesmaids’ dresses came from JJ’S house and we did our own customising.
Castlerea, my hometown, was the location of our ceremony and I began the day by opening a gift from Ross. Tim Tams, my favourite biscuits shipped all the way from Australia! We had our hair done by Sarah in Grafters Hair Salon and we returned home to have our makeup done by Julie from Julies Beauty and Makeup Studio. We were in two minds whether we should have a videographer and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions we made. Paddy from Evoke Wedding Company was just fantastic. He was such a calming influence on the morning, floating around the house doing his own thing and unobtrusively getting shots of all the goings on. Ross had the sole decision on the wedding car and he booked a Maserati with Wedding Cars Ireland. Our driver Pat kept myself and my dad nice and calm on the drive to the church listening to Christina Perri’s ‘A thousand years’.
I was waiting for the nerves to set in as I stood at the back of the church. A friend had given me the advice to take some mental pictures throughout the day and this was one of them. I looked up the church and took in the amazing flowers by La Bella Fleur from Drumshanbo, the sound of the beautiful music by Celtic Wedding Entertainment, all our family and friends smiling and I banked it in my memory.
Catriona & Ross Were Married in Kilronan Castle
Our guests are still raving about the food, the service and the attention to detail
The two flower girls, my niece Jennifer and Ross’s niece Chloe, really took their job very seriously! They held hands and took off up the long aisle without a backward glance! After a beautiful ceremony in the church I was baptised in, we headed for Kilronan Castle.
The weather had taken a turn for the worst but with such an amazing venue and such an amazing photographer we didn’t let the rain bother us for a single second. Gary Barrett managed to get some outdoor shots in the lashing rain and he promised I wouldn’t get a drop of rain on me and he somehow managed to keep his promise! The choice for beautiful indoor shots in Kilronan Castle is endless, which makes it the perfect venue rain or shine.
Everything about Kilronan Castle was magical from the hundreds of candles on the walkway down to the ballroom to the Prosecco toast before the speeches. Our guests are still raving about the food, the service and the attention to detail on absolutely everything. It was honestly more perfect than we could ever have imagined.
We danced the night away to Freefall who had the dance floor full all night. At one stage my bridesmaid turned to me and said “Can they not just play one bad song so we can have a rest!” this summed up the band perfectly!
Kilronan Castle is such a special place and we have so many unforgettable memories. From the best man splitting his trousers while he was “starting the lawn mower” (his signature dance move!) to my dad getting out of bed and making his way down to the residents bar to lead the sing song….a perfect end to a perfect day.
We honeymooned in the Dominican Republic where we had plenty of time to reflect on the most amazing day of our life!
